Valentine's Day Treat- Pink Heart Rice Kripsies

Better late than never...

This past Valentine's Day I made some very cute heart shaped pink Rice Krispie treats for my daughter's day care class. They absolutely loved them and we had a blast making them.

Pink Heart Shaped Rice Krispie Treats

Melt 4-5 cups of marshmallows in with 3 1/2 Tablespoons of butter. You can do this however you choose. I did it by placing a bowl over a simmering pot of water and storing until melted. It would be much quicker in the microwave.

Stir in 2 drops of pink or red food coloring. I use natural food coloring found at any Whole Foods Store or health food market. You can also play around and use extremely natural food coloring by using pureed fruit. I haven't tested if that would mess up any consistency but it might turn out to be quite the tasty treat.

Stir in 5 cups of Rice Krispies cereal

Grease a 9x13 pan and smooth down the treats to as thin as you'd like them and let cool for 3 or 4 minutes.

Turn out the cooled treats onto your counter or a cutting board and using heart shaped cookie cutters, cut out your hearts!
Let them cool another 5-10 minutes and ENJOY!

Try playing around with different colors and cookie cutters for other holidays and events. This is a great family project for you and your little ones!

Heart Crayon Valentines: A DIY

I'm excited to post my first DIY blog post. Hopefully it won't ramble too much and I'll fine tune my blog writing skills in the posts to come. Enjoy!

This year I decided to get a little more creative with Valentine's Day. I saw a post on another blog (still scouring to find the link) that gave me the idea to make crayons out of the old bits and pieces of broken ones lying around.

This was not only fun project to make for my daughter's class, but a fun project in general that even my 2 year old joined in on.

The first thing we did was created something to set the crayons in that would allow cutting the papers with a razor without cutting your fingers. We used a piece of grooved aluminum and set the crayon in it and slit the paper with a razor blade. You could use anything you have laying around the house that will hold the crayon in place though.
After we peeled all the wrappers off the crayons, we broke them into pieces and divided them into similar color schemes that would make for pretty crayons.

I then poured a bit of glitter in the bottom of the heart silicon molds we were using to make them in. I filled each heart full of like colored crayon pieces and sprinkled more glitter on top of them. You can use as many crayons as you like. If you'd like thinner crayons, only fill it halfway or 3/4 of the way full. If you'd like big thick crayons like we wanted, you can overfill a little.

Then I set the silicon mold on a cookie sheet and put it in the oven at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for about 12 minutes. You can set your oven a little higher for a shorter amount of time if you'd like. This worked out perfectly for us.

After taking them out of the oven, just let them set there for 20-30 minutes to cool. Then you can flip over the mold and push them out onto the cookie sheet. I put down foil so first, so not to ruin the sheet. Then i let them cool a little bit longer.

One of the problems I faced was the waxy residue on the bottom of the crayons. The only thing I could figure out is that in some of my crayons, there were pieces from "cheaper" versions of crayons, which may of had more waxy content. The ones that I know were solidly Crayola brand of crayons didn't have the wax residue.

Unfortunately, the waxy build up on some of them had to go, and to do that I just used a plain ole kitchen butter knife to almost widdle the wax away. It worked perfectly.

I then used a large 3 1/2 inch circle paper punch to create a background out of kraft paper card stock for the crayon Valentines. I have a stamp kit that I purchased on the advice of the lovely Lauren at Lauren Elise Crafted and used it to customize the kraft paper hearts I was attaching the crayons to.

I then glued the crayons to the kraft paper using a hot glue gun. Be careful though when using your fingers to secure it into place. There may be some looming around the outside of the crayon... I learned this the hard way.

Finally, I let them set overnight before packing them and the Valentine's Day Pink Rice Krispie Hearts up for my daughter's class party.

There were a few extras, so I tied them with some string and gave them to my daughter with her Valentine's day surprises.

New etsy shop is up and running

I'm happy to say that I've FINALLY gotten the Etsy shop up and running. After several days of photographs, several more days or organization and even more days of setting online and listing everything... IT'S DONE!!!!

Most of the items we used in the wedding. I will make it a habit now to find things at local antique stores, fairs, and markets and list them as well.

Enjoy!!!

Here are a few sneak peaks of what you can find there....
